New study out on statin use and risk of IBD development

Published online: 28.10.2025

The Journal of Internal Medicine just published our study on statin use and risk of incident inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) conducted using the Danish health registers.

Among a cohort of more than 600,000 individuals, we found that statin use is associated with a 16% reduction in the risk of IBD development, both ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. So, when indicated for primary prevention of cardiovascular disease, statins may prevent one additional case of IBD for every 2,881 individuals treated.
