New study: Pediatric IBD through four decades

Published online: 11.03.2026

Our latest study on phenotypes of pediatric IBD, published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology, highlights the growing prevalence and extensiveness of childhood-onset IBD.

The study establishes and characterizes the Pediatric North Denmark IBD Cohort (pNorDIBD) - a comprehensive cohort of all children diagnosed with IBD within the North Denmark Region for more than 40 years, containing highly detailed information about each child's IBD diagnosis and subsequent disease course.

While the incidence rate of pediatric IBD has increased more than 250 percent from 1978-2020 in the North Denmark Region, the study also indicates that the children on average have less extensive disease at diagnosis than previously reported in other cohorts - though with findings possibly indicating a trend towards more extensive disease at diagnosis in recent years.

As the pNorDIBD cohort allows us to comprehensively describe the full spectrum of IBD courses, it lays the foundation for future research on childhood-onset IBD, including studies on mortality, morbidity, and prediction of later disease course.
